Free

heyhey,
i am almost a free woman.
finally i finished the jury. and with some kind of surprise i have to say i surrvieved the stress wich cooked up my stomache.
so all the drama came to an conclusion, and just that made me kind of proud.
there is still a lot to do, because i got loats of critics on which i have to work now.
this is a glass sculpture and a book, the main pieces. i just love the room in which i wanted to expose it. it's under the roof of my uni. a mystical place. an old libary, now kind of broken down and the home to loats of pigons. but still you fnd this athmosphere in there that just makes you wisper to not disturb anyone, who ever it will be .
and the two first images of my book. so much thank's to you, with helping ma glueing and cutting it. 2 hands and one brain just weren't enough for that job.

i got the critics abou the fact that sometimes my stuff is to clean and to estetic to be art. well, maybe it's just because i love design as well as art.

for the rest i showed some ceramic objects and other books i made.
and a video...
i will post pics of the ceramics as soon as i made good ones.

see you in a few minutes for a coffee... oh what a feeling a saturday to relax ( i just don't think about this 200 pages of art philosophie in dutch i have to read till wednesday... )

kisses
sophia

random

Dear S.,

some random photos only, for today.
The uni- papers are completely claiming my brain. Right now, Virginia Woolf's Orlando is going through a poststructuralist and feminist cross-examination. Next monday it has to be finished.

so, here's me with Orlando and the good old black cat:

what a discovery: 14 complete sets of collector's tea dishes hidden in the cupboard! I almost felt like crying when I made the discovery. My family and I started to clean up grandma's stuff. I'll try to make better photos still.

This year's favorite winter food: Pommegranate!

"Januar- Frühling" is what the news stations call the weather right now. it's about ten degrees outside and it feels sooo nice!
Yesterday we had a fantastic sundown:

This is the same place about a week ago:

Tomorrow I'll take the train back to Belgium. Weird, after being at home for a whole month! I am looking forward to seeing you all, though.

Love,
M.

another foggy winter's night

Dear S.,

Another foggy winter's night.

(view from my room)

Today I went to downstairs to my grandma's. It is so weird to see all her things, smell her perfume.

I took her old sewing box, glued the broken parts, tightened the screws, polished the wood.

here are some of the treasures from the box. (click the photos to enlarge them!)

this is how my grandma kept her buttons:

I still remember how I used to play with them and sort them by colour and size when I was a kid.

Here's a real curiosity: mending thread for nylon panties! Do they even still sell this nowadays?
The pretty black folded paper contains high quality stitching needles.

some of the most beautiful buttons. I love the tiny irregular ones, the slightly damaged ones. Also check out the three round see-through buttons- they are made of glass!

And here, a beautiful assortiment of mending wools, mending needles and other old stuff. I especially love the "Alpen Stopfwolle" :)

This is it for today. I hope the foggy times will clear up a bit, soon. For all of us, especially for J.

Love,

M.

PJ

Dear S.,

here's my latest sewing project! my very first pyjama pants + shirt with applications, coming in a travel bag- a Christmas present for N.

sadly enough I don't have any time for sewing right now. Uni work is keeping me busy, hours and hours a day. For my master courses, I don't have any exams but I have to write papers. The first one of 19 pages is done, 2 more tasks to go. After a week of almost constant uni work, I am really tired and don't feel like working at all. the winter sun is shining into my eyes right now, as I sit at the table in my room. I feel like going for a walk or drinking coffee with friends or starting a new sewing project or reading a book or just being lazy and watch tv all day long. sigh. Need to start next paper, it's only a short one, 1500 words, but it needs a lot of research, deadline tomorrow evening. need to start next paper.

Lots of love, dear S.
I am looking forward to all of us being back in Antwerp. I miss all of you, I miss my own house, I miss Charlie Mew. But the air here does me good, I was able to work good for uni, and I think my family kind of needs me now. So I'll still stay, for a while.

kisses,

M.

I dare bake cake

Dear S.,

Happy new year to you!
I've been at home now for almost two weeks, and today is the first time I baked something. This is a very long time for me being creatively and bakingly completely inactive. My mum doesn't really appreciate cooking and baking experiments, I'm not so sure why. So, due to lacking enthusiasm, I kept myself quiet. And got myself 2 new baking books to survive this phase of abstinence. I planned to buy one for a long time now, and they are a good investment of my Christmas money. Of course I couldn't decide which one to get, so I got two :)

this is a book I have already seen in various countries in various languages. Now I just had to get it, it is one of the most beautiful books about tea and eating- culture books I know. Can we please have this party as soon as we're both back in Antwerp?

or this one?

or this?

Here's the second book:

I already have "Basic Cooking" from the same series. I love it, and I love the baking book too. I's really so much more than mere basic! I like the way things are explained, and, very importantly, I like the pictures for each and every single recipe. There are not only sweet bakings in there, but also plenty of recipes for breads and other savory baking dishes. You'll love it :)

And now, finally, here is what I baked today: Sandkuchen- sand cake. The book promised that it'll be sandier than the most sandy Ostseestrand.. and it is! Yummy, I tell you. I got so happy, seeing the cake in the oven while studying/writing my paper at the kitchen table. (But really, when I was searching for the baking tin, out of nowhere sounded the voice of mum: "what's going on here?"... "baking cake." door shut, from my side and on with the :) stuff. )

dear, I will write soon again. In the last four days I've been writing... soo much! 11 pages, many more to follow. About one of the most beautiful austrian books I know, "Die Wand" from Marlen Haushofer. I want to post a few quotes next time, maybe you should read it once.

love,

M.
